Saltwater Aquarium Kits

It can be overwhelming for an inexperienced hobbyist to set up a new saltwater aquarium tank from scratch. Purchasing a saltwater aquarium kit can take the stress and uncertainty out of exactly what should be purchased to start with, and what can be added at a later date.

Unless there is an experienced person to help, the best way for a beginner to get started with a saltwater aquarium tank is to purchase a kit. These kits are put together by pet and aquarium suppliers and will include almost all you need to create a beautiful saltwater marine aquarium.

The best kits will come with a decently sized aquarium tank. This is of course the most expensive component of the saltwater aquarium kit. Other things you might find in a saltwater aquarium kit package include:

  • backdrops (these can be foam or simply a laminated poster)
  • fish food
  • heater
  • filter
  • hydrometer
  • saltwater mix
  • live rock (optional)
  • thermometer
  • filter
  • media such as activated carbon
  • power strip
  • brushes or scrubbers
  • substrate
  • and anything else the store adds to the kit

Some fish stores will also give you some fish to get started with, if the tank is already setup and has been running for a while in the store. If you are starting from scratch then you will need to “run in” the tank before adding fish, so do not purchase fish on the first day.

You may be advised to wait several weeks before adding fish to the tank. This is called cycling the tank.

Saltwater aquarium kits are great for beginners or those who simply don’t have the knowledge or time to purchase all the parts and accessories separately.
